There's a new Rimmel foundation doing the rounds, and as a fan of their Lasting Finish foundation I was looking forward to trying their latest offering. I actually did a bit of filming with Rimmel for their London Fashion Week videos and was given this to try on the day, but I was actually looking to purchase it myself and I believe a few places have this on an introductory offer at the moment if you are interested in trying it.
This foundation is dubbed the "Wake Me Up" foundation. Said to contain "radiance pearls" this aims to illuminate and restore radiance to the face, with peptides and SPF15. I've spoken about this a few times before, but I never really go for any of the skincare and sun protection claims of foundations, I always wear SPF under my makeup as sometimes I like a light covering of foundation and obviously just like sunscreen less product applied means you might not completely cover everywhere and will have less protection, just something to note! I'm just going to go off the foundation as I always do, as a purely cosmetic/makeup item. I have been using the shade 200 Soft Beige.
Unlike other radiance enhancing foundations (Revlon Photoready I'm looking at you) this has no shimmer and therefore you won't be experiencing any Cullen moments when wearing it. This is good news for anyone with larger pores or fine lines as the shimmer can enhance that significantly. This foundation seems to achieve the glowing result via its fresh, dewy finish, although I know the word dewy scares a lot of people. This won't make you shiny! Although I usually wear a primer, I feel I can forego that step when using this foundation as it fills in my (large) pores, similar to the Collection 2000 concealer everyone loves so much, this is probably due to silicones somewhere in the formula.
I have normal to dry skin, and this foundation didn't make my skin feel tight or uncomfortable, but if you have any flaking/dry patches of skin, this (like most foundations) will emphasise it. It is pleasant to wear and doesn't feel heavy, but gives a nice amount of medium/full coverage on imperfections. Without powder it lasted around 6 hours on me (no major problems just a bit shiny on the old nose) and powdered it lasted a full day, over 8 hours no problems.
I'm really impressed with the formula of this, very oily skins might want to go for the Lasting Finish but normal and combination skin should love this, and even on my dry skin I had no problems. At £8.99 this is a great foundation and the pump dispenser makes for hygienic and easy application. I have used the real techniques buffing brush with this but prefer my fingers with this formula.
My only criticism is regarding the range of shades. I could write a whole separate post on this as it is something I feel very strongly about, and is by no means merely a Rimmel issue, but one the whole of the British High Street needs to fix when it comes to makeup. I understand that makeup is a business and there is no point manufacturing items that won't sell and will go to waste but we live in a multicultural country with British citizens of every skin tone. To put it shortly, six shades of foundation simply isn't enough, and I honestly think it's time a mainstream British company led the way and created face products that all women can wear instead of forcing darker skinned women into shopping at Bobbi Brown or MAC. When I go to London I certainly don't see only people with the skintone of the six foundation shades, and with London in the company name I'd love to see Rimmel reflect that, they have a great product line and it would be amazing if more people could enjoy it.
Like I said, this is something the whole of the cosmetics industry disappoints me with, I've worked on a few counters and its upsetting and embarrassing to have to tell people you don't make a product dark (and in some cases light!) enough for them. Sort it out beauty industry! That being said, this is a fabulous foundation well worth the £8.99, especially when I can skip a primer. Have you tried this?
Edit to add: A lot of you are commenting saying yours was very shimmery and in some cases had to be returned! Although mine has a very slight pearly sheen when held up to the light in the bottle, when I pump this on my hand and apply it on my face there is absolutely no shimmer in mine, not even under close inspection in bright light! Wondering if this is a sample issue or if there are inconsistencies?

I think you're spot on with what you've said about shade ranges, I can't use this because i'm too pale, and the lightest shade was quite orange toned!

Great review, Gem!
I got this as a freebie at LFW and have tried it a few times. I haven't found it to be that long-lasting, but maybe I need to use a powder on top. To be fair I'm usually wearing it to work at Topshop, which is a tough environment for any foundation! After a few annoying customers, I've sweated half of my makeup off with rage! Will give it a go with powder tomorrow and hope for longer lasting results :)
Hope all's good with you! xx
Whar a brilliant review. I plan to get this very foundation soon. Anything that helps me look a bit more awake sounds good, Your photo suggests it looks good on camera too.
The shade issue is so frustatrating and annoyingly, it always seems to be the better working products that come in the limited range. I can think of one slightly higher end brand who are particularly guilty of this. Great products, rubbish shade range:(
I tried a sample of this and I really liked it, although it was just too dark for me, and Rimmel don't cater for pale girls.

I got a trial size and mine has got shimmer in :(
I'm so glad you did a review on this because i've wanted an honest opinion on it aswell as my own. I agree with you on the most part, but i have to disagree with the 'no shimmer' point. I held my bottle (Ivory) up to the light and can definitely see shimmer, albeit not as prominent as Photoready, but it's there. I love the consistency of this, it's thicker than my beloved Bourjois Healthy Mix serum. Overall i like it. Love your reviews and videos, keep it up! x
I totally agree with you about the shades! I struggle to find my shade in high street brands so I've had to end up going to mac and it is pretty pricey, and as a student I would love to be able to get a cheap foundation which is good. I see all these reviews about high street foundations which everybody says are good but I can't get them because their not in my shade. It really frustrates me, and concelor is an even bigger problem. It is virtually impossible to get a dark concelor unless I go to mac or bobbi brown but like I said if love to be able to get a cheaper one!
yes, and there's too much shimmer for my liking , I was Mrs Edward Cullen in the sun, I took it back .
I got this when it was on offer in Boots, so far found it good coverage, and good wear.
Agree with you on the shades though, not a massive range.

Your reviews are always brilliant Gemma! So informative and honest, I really trust your opinions.
I completely agree about the shade ranges of high street foundations - it's quite disgusting really.

I have this and while I like it, it definitely has a lot of shimmer in it! It's on offer at £5.99 in a lot of places.
I really want to buy this. I have heard such good things and im not really happy with the foundations that i own.

I was pondering over buying this but went with the Bourjois Healthy Mix instead. I think I am going to try this one next though, great review! :) I feel exactly the same about the shade ranges too, I think it is awful that make-up companies aren't thinking to cater for people of darker and paler skin tones.

i agree with you here! lovely foundation, tried it a couple of weeks ago, however the lightest shade is a bit too dark for me at this time of year! will be perfect in the summer. not normally a rimmel fan but this has me converted :P

Sleek are supposed to be great for darker skin :) they have loads of shades of foundation - the only thing is you might have to order online because not all are displayed in stores.
Apart from that, the shade ranges are terrible!!

I have this and the lightest shade is still to dark for me. On top of that my bottle had chunks of glitter through it, not just subtle simmer. It wasn't as noticeable when I first applied it but as I buffed it there were just chucks of glitter on my face, it wasn't a good look, haha!
I received a sample of this but haven't tried yet. But i'm curious!
This is a lovely foundation but definitely not good for oily skin! totally agree with your comment about Rimmel only having 6 shades!

Great review! I agree with the limited shade range, I have very pale pink toned skin so it's very had to find a matching foundation xx
I had a magazine tester and I really liked it. I didn't notice any shimmer or shine in it. Not sure if I would purchase it or not, but definitely think it's good for £8.99! :-) xx
Great review Gemma, I'm definitely going to be trying this out, I'm a sucker for the hype - it proved to be true for the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundations, which I adore, and I'm hoping this will be a similar experience!
Great Review. I've recently bought this too and im really loving it. never tried Rimmel foundtions but im really impressed. Agree about the shade ranges on the british high street though x
i cant wait to try this xx
Personally, I don't mind the PhotoReady by Revlon at all! But, I'm super pale to begin with and love a good highlighter.
I'm interested in trying this one out though!

Great review!
I may go and try this :)
Thanks for sharing!

Ive done a review on this on Youtube and I absolutely love it. Ive had a load of commebnts about shimmer but i think that may be the darkers shades as i dont. great review.
I was so excited to try this foundation, but it turns out the shade range doesn't go pale enough for me either. Annoying
I am keen to try this foundation out. For a reference point what shade are you in a mac foundation. Thanks
Completely agree on the shades issue. But I also want to add this: if you think the UK has a limited shade selection try Spain! I'm half english/half spanish and I live in Spain but I have that "lovely" english pasty white skin (nw15 is even a tiny bit dark for me in some MAC foundations). I have NEVER found a foundation in the high street that suits me in Spain; the lightest ones they stock are at least two shades darker than what I need. So I usually stock up on foundations when I visit my family in the UK.
But Rimmel is the only brand I find have very dark shades, even in the UK, which sucks because it means I can NEVER try out their foundations or concealers.
Hiya Gemma, I love your blog keep up the good work xxx I really appreciate the detail you put into your reviews and posts xxx I was just wondering what shade you are in Mac as a reference, as i would like to try this foundation but I am rubbish as matching myself in the chemist!!

I just found this really sticky like I do most Rommel foundations. I really wish it wasnt because it offers great coverage.
Brilliant review anyways

Hiya, thanks for the review on the foundation!
I got a sample that came from a magazine, as soon as I was applying I notice like "glitter" on my face, I thought that I might touched some eyeshadow of mine or something, but no it was the foundation, I didn't like that detail, and then later on like my T-zone is oily, specially my nose, it was hell, I felt like the foundation was melting away from my face >.<. I guess I won't be buying this foundation, thank god for magazine samples haha.
Oh and I think it's a valid point that you have there regarding the limitation on foundation shades! One U.K. brand that is not extremely expensive and has about 30 shades is Sleek MakeUp! xoxo
I have oily skin and I tried a sample of this received in a magazine and loved it! When swatched on my hand I did notice tiny shimmering particles but didn't notice them at all once it was on my face. I applied with my fingers so perhaps application has something to do with the shimmer showing through?
Great review and I agree with you about the colours, its a big shame its so limited. Even if they produced a larger range and some were only available online (as I know they're limited with stand space) it would be a start!
