I always get comments whenever I wear red lipstick in a video saying ‘Oh I wish I could pull off a red lip!’ – well, let’s just say up until recently I felt a bit self conscious wearing red lips, and then something just clicked inside me (probably old age) and I decided I didn’t really care what passers-by thought about my lips. Let’s face it, nobody is really even looking at them, but when you wear a bright colour you feel like even people in the Himalaya’s are gossiping about them.
I hate makeup ‘rules’ (you can walk around with spiderwebs drawn on your face for me if it makes you happy!) I personally have a few tips on what I like to do when I wear a bright lip:
- I like to keep my foundation fresh and dewy. Something about a heavily powdered face with a block lipstick looks dated and ageing on me, especially since I don’t really need powder and my skin is on the dryer side. If I need to powder to make my makeup last, I make sure it’s a fine translucent one.
- I like to keep my eyes minimal. Stila kitten or another neutral but pretty shadow with some liquid liner is enough for me, it defines my eyes without screaming that I’ve spent all day in the mirror. Same goes for blusher.
- I like to put some lipbalm on after the lipsick. Underneath makes it bleed on me, but on the top just dabbed in the middle looks lovely. I like the original carmex for this because it doesn’t slip around too much.
- Defined brows are a must for me with this, otherwise my face can look a little ‘off’ with the minimal makeup. When I do my brows the whole thing has a bit more structure and the red lips don’t look so intense.
Two of my favourite red lipsticks are Eve Red by Daniel Sandler for All For Eve and Illamasqua Maneater, but a great alternative that is on the less pricey side is Cherry Bomb by Look Beauty. I love berry reds because I think they flatter everyone and look more youthful and fun than a deep red. They also look lovely as a stain with lipbalm!
What is your favourite red lipstick?
