STELLA MCCARTNEY L.I.L.Y ABSOLUTE
You know when you have one of those days where you feel incredibly lucky to do what you do? Yesterday was one of those days for me. It’s no secret that Stella McCartney has been someone I’ve looked up to for a long time. I adore everything she does and I’ve worn her original fragrance, Stella, since it’s first launch almost ten years ago. I was around eighteen when I got it, and for me it’s been the only real scent of my adult life. Perfumes come and go, but if you raid my beauty stash, you’ll always find at least one bottle. I rocked her Peony fragrance for a while so I was excited to get a whiff of her newest fragrance, L.I.L.Y Absolute, and of course to finally meet the lady herself. I admit I may have been a tad nervous. When you’ve looked up to someone for so long the danger is that you either make a fool of yourself or they are not what you expect and you leave disappointed. I’m so pleased that Stella was not only as cool and put together as I expected, but she was so warm, friendly and animated that I left with more admiration than I went in with.
L.I.L.Y Absolute is a deeper, more intense version of her original L.I.L.Y fragrance and explores her love of contrasts. Unlike many celebrities who lend their face to a campaign and slap their name on a bottle, Stella is very much involved with the creation of her scents, in her words to the point of obsession. The original L.I.L.Y fragrance was very much inspired by scents in her life, particularly the smell of being outdoors as a child, and she told us that she wanted to take Lily of the Valley, a scent that has recently become quite old fashioned, and do something different with it. Lily of the Valley makes an appearance briefly in May and June, a fleeting period which Stella drew inspiration from.
For the Absolute, she wanted to explore contrasts, the overly feminine flower of the Lily of the Valley contrasting with it’s clean, minimalist stem was represented by adding black truffle to the fragrance and adding pink pepper, patchouli and amber to the dry woody base. This for me, is the perfect evening fragrance. It’s very sensual and confident, so it provides the perfect night scent to my daytime Stella. Alberto Morillas, the perfumier behind all of Stella’s fragrances chatted to us about Stella’s desire for clean, uncomplicated fragrances that still have depth, and they definitely didn’t disappoint here.
After Stella departed, we were left admiring the beautiful handbags (including the black Falabella which will one day be mine!), the Stella candle (which again, I need!), the gorgeous lingerie and perhaps nicest of all, our bottles of L.I.L.Y absolute that had been personally engraved. It was a pleasure to meet the lady herself and the man behind the fragrance I’ve been wearing my whole life, and one thing’s for sure – as long as they keep making them, I’ll keep wearing them.
