I’ve fallen in love….with a concept. Yep, when I heard about Pop Basic I had one of those “that’s SUCH a good idea” moments followed by “why didn’t I think of that?”
The idea is simple – about every month, they release a micro collection of clothing and accessories that aims to give you not only basics but also trend-led items. You slowly build up your wardrobe and are left with pieces you can style in many different ways. You sign up, they send you an email when the new collection is released, and if you like it, you buy it. Unlike other services that rely on subscriptions, you don’t have to sign your soul over to them or agree to purchase, if you don’t like a collection you just don’t buy it, so you don’t have to worry about ‘skipping a month’ or ‘opting out’. Along with the three items you also get a little lifestyle extra and maybe some discount codes for brands that are in keeping with the Pop Basic feel. I know I’m raving here, but on top of being a great idea it’s also really nicely done. The website is chic and stylish and the images and video that go along with the collections are so beautifully shot and inspirational that you’re left with tons of ideas for styling each piece.
The Beta micro collection (pictured above) consists of the Basic Polka Dot blouse (so soft and silky), the Midsummer Night necklace and the Yellow & Gold Twist necklace. I’ve worn the necklaces a lot and had a million compliments – because they landed on my doorstep from San Francisco you don’t see a million people wandering around with them on, which is nice. The little extra this month was a pack of blotting papers from Japan and your parcel comes complete with a styling card where three bloggers (who happen to be some of my very favourites, Chelsea, Suzie & Tiffany) show how they would wear each item. The $65 price point (about £43) is great and includes free worldwide shipping. I love this service so much, the only negative I could possibly ever come up with is that if you do live overseas you will likely get a customs charge, but that isn’t Pop Basic’s fault, just the nature of the international beast. Depending on where you live it might not be an issue (I know our rather money-hungry Royal Mail add on an extra £10 charge just for the admin of charging you which bumps it up a bit) but honestly, since international shipping is free I just thought of it as my shipping costs. Considering the quality of the items and the fact that you won’t see everyone in your street wearing them, it’s more than a steal. I’m definitely sold.
