After several generous sample sizes from different beauty boxes I have finally worked my way through a full size of this award winning turbo-charged conditioning treatment. Made by Philip Kingsley, Elasticizer is a pre-shampoo treatment that was originally created for Audrey Hepburn. The idea behind the name is that healthy hair stretches when wet before shrinking back to normal length when dry, hence why you should always dry-cut a fringe. Processed and damaged hair however, doesn’t have the same elasticity and will snap and break instead of stretching. Applying Elasticizer to damp hair for 10-20 minutes before shampooing and conditioning as normal is supposed to give hair the moisture and flexibility it needs.
I used to be dubious about pre-shampoo treatments, it seemed to me that any benefits would be simply washed away. In the last year or so however I’ve probably used more of them than regular deep conditioners, with this and oils being my favourite choices. I notice a huge improvement in the manageability of my hair without it being too weighed down. I have very coarse hair anyway, but when I dyed over my ombre this product, along with coconut oil, was a lifesaver, and this in particular is way less messy and time consuming than an oil, especially if you’re travelling or staying over at a friends house.
At £27.50 (£23.40 here with free delivery) this isn’t cheap, but a little goes a long way and I apply this weekly before a bath, and sometimes sleep in it if my hair is particularly brittle. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with brittle hair that they want to try and save without chopping it all off. One of the main ingredients however, is castor oil, so I may try a little experiment to see how that works for me alone. Stay tuned! As I mentioned above however, if you do travel and want a product that is easier to use with less fuss than a regular oil treatment, this is great.
